<! ——————- CURRENT EVENTS —————->
BLOOD OF A FOUNDER!

Papo Colo opens his heart to you at the Armory Show

Exit Art will be participating in the Armory this year at Booth #90-M002 (near the Internet Lounge) with a small-but-huge exhibition, Latin Flow, featuring the work of several up-and-coming artists from throughout the Americas, including Fancisca Benitez, Maritza Molina, Milton Rosa-Ortiz, Rudy Royval, Zoe Sheehan Saldana, Charles Juhasz Alvarado, and Arnaldo Morales.

In addition to the exhibit, Exit Art co-founder Papo Colo will be offering a performance, Blood Kisses, Thursday (tonight), Friday, and Saturday from 4-7pm. In his own words–which, really, we could never imitate and would hurt ourselves trying:

In a 3 Ft. sq space,
One on one, eye to eye,
Papo Colo, bare chested,
Willl ask you:
Do you believe in god?
And with a knife in hand
will make an incision above the heart,
and with a piece of cotton fabric
will collect the blood.
He will sign it, frame it, and kiss you,
making a print from his body
for 500 dollars to benefit Exit Art.

Exit Art's Indecent Exposure
Exit Art is a great fan of the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, but we still feel it's a bum rap: In a letter from MNN dated January 21, 2006, Exit Art was squarely told: "Your program, Exit Art TV, which aired 12/28/05 at 10pm on Channel 34, is in violation of our programming policies and contained content unsuitable for daytime broadcast."

As avid Jerry Springer aficionados, we were both shocked and a little tickled to have been out-unsuitabled, if only for a moment. The offending image? "In particular, there was footage of male genitalia before 11pm. Programs that contain nudity must be on after 11pm." (NOTE: The offending nudity came from a glimpse of performance artist Rob Andrews from his window installation in last spring's prayingproject
. You can gratify your prurience here).

Save MNN!
Fig-leaf-over-genitals demands notwithstanding, Exit Art would hate to lose the one cable-station that is actively watching out for your visual ethics during primetime (while still offering some nifty filth later). So to redress our karmic debt, we are urging you to help spread the word and help to save cable access in New York City. You can learn more here.

Cheers!

<! — PLUG CITY —>
This week, Exit Art freshens its breath for the Art Critics of the Brooklyn Rail. In the words of Exit Art's Development Director Jamie Hook:

"The Brooklyn Rail keeps getting better and better, of course, but nowhere is their trajectory more evident than in the breadth and quality of their arts criticism. From a satisfying range of coverage (under the editorship of Phong Bui) to the overall high quality of the writing (especially David Marcus and Thomas Michelli), to the pleasure of finding all of this in what is essentially a neighborhood paper, the Rail is an all round good machine. Especially enjoyable in this issue is the (Sensationally Long!) interview with art critic (and former NY Times reviewer) Michael Brenson, who touches on issues of institutionalization, money, and writing in a long and illuminating conversation with Rail publisher Phong Bui and editor David Levi-Strauss. There are moments in this conversation as inspiring as anything on a gallery wall this month."

The Building Show
September 2006

Vertical memory, icon of a landscape, symbol of a city,
habitat of illegality, historical architecture

Proposals due by May 1, 2006

In the fall of 2006, Exit Art will present The Building Show. Buildings have become iconic figures of cities and countries, as an homage to the vertical icons that surround us, we are asking artists to choose any building in the world and to respond to it by making a conceptual, realistic, personal, intimate or analytical portrait of that structure.
Our personal relationship to buildings is at the crux of this exhibition. These architectural wonders are loved or despised by their neighbors. Oftentimes buildings serve as a symbol of a city or have deeply rooted historical significance, they form skylines that are embedded into our vertical memory. Other times buildings are surrounded by controversy, neighborhoods are rezoned, gentrification causes displacement, and old buildings are torn down and quickly rebuilt for new uses. For The Building Show, we want artists to respond to the love / hate relationship they have to these important structures. Artists can choose any building in the world, but the building needs to physically exist today.

How to Apply
Proposals may be for work in any medium. Please submit a one page description of your project idea: a sketch of the proposed project; a resume; and documentation of your previous work (10-20 slides or images on CD, please send images at lowest resolution so they open quickly, or a 3-5 minute NTSC VHS video or DVD). Please include a self addressed stamped envelope for the return of your work. You will be notified by email of your involvement in the exhibition so please include an email address with your materials. Exit Art is not responsible for returning works submitted with out a SASE.
