NOTES FROM THE REVOLUTION

Che Guevara visits Exit Art

The most interesting people seem to keep wandering in. This week, Exit Art had
the fortune of a visit from revolutionary Marxist leader Ernesto "Che"
Guevara, who was on hand to be interviewed by a United Nations delegate
in the corner of our gallery space. Okay, we're lying–but only sorta!
The truth is that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh was in
town to shoot some pre-remodeled UN scenes for his upcoming biopic,
Che (aka Guerilla), and he stopped by with his crew to shoot a scene in
Exit Art (the scene where the socialist leader gets lost in the
proto-bourgeois future only to find a kindred spirit hideaway in a
Hell's Kitchen-based leftist art collective–or something like that). The whole experience
was quite lovely, and we were treated to the visual and olfactory
delights of Benicio
del Toro smoking a Stogie. We have no complaints.

Gosh
& Golly: Music from Mali
Exit Art's fabulous exhibit The Studio Visit has
been popular of late. We hope things only pick up for this weekend's
performances in the gallery, featuring poetry, music, and the
unclassifiable (this reporter was party to a rather odd fax from Saturday's band, Antonius Block, asking
permission to install a large plastic bubble in the gallery for
Saturday's show.) Things kick off tonight with Baye Kouyate et les
tougarake a great act from Mali. Stop by at 7pm for some soup, and stay for
performances at 8. Tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 20, we host a launch party for A Gathering
of the Tribes, and Saturday, Jan. 21 features the aforementioned
Antonious Block. We hope to see you there!!!

Exit Art on your T.V.
Episode III of Exit Art's visual
archive on MNN channel 34 airs
this Wednesday, January 25 at 10pm. This episode, titled, "The Studio Visit," stars such artists asJoyce
Pensato and Jerry
Kearns, and is filmed entirely within their studios. Don't Miss
It!!!

This week, Exit Art spins the bottle so that it lands on The Gallery at
HAI (directly above the old Exit Art) for its bold new show,

Survey of Outsider Art of America. This show is co-curated by
Francis Palazzolo, one of the artists currently installed in Exit Art's
windows (and pictured in the previous chapter).

In his own words:

"This show is a wonderful
collection of artwork from self-taught artists from across the United
States. THese artists show an awkward intensity that is rarely explored
by their professional-minded peers, who are trained and exhibit in
contemporary art institutions. Yet, the opportunity for people diagnosed
with mental illness to participate in the cultural dialogue is not only
spiritually meaningful and uplifting for them, but nourishes the
post-modern condition for all. Come for the opening this January 25 to meet
the artists, and appreciate their work!"

Survey of
Outsider Art of America is on display through March 11th. There
will be a reception on January 25th. Hours and Directions are <a

The Building Show
September 2006

Vertical memory, icon of a landscape, symbol of a city,
habitat of illegality, historical architecture

Proposals due by May 1, 2006

In the fall of 2006, Exit Art will present The Building Show. Buildings have become iconic figures of cities and countries, as an homage to the vertical icons that surround us, we are asking artists to choose any building in the world and to respond to it by making a conceptual, realistic, personal, intimate or analytical portrait of that structure.

Our personal relationship to buildings is at the crux of this exhibition. These architectural wonders are loved or despised by their neighbors. Oftentimes buildings serve as a symbol of a city or have deeply rooted historical significance, they form skylines that are embedded into our vertical memory. Other times buildings are surrounded by controversy, neighborhoods are rezoned, gentrification causes displacement, and old buildings are torn down and quickly rebuilt for new uses. For The Building Show, we want artists to respond to the love / hate relationship they have to these important structures. Artists can choose any building in the world, but the building needs to physically exist today.

How to Apply
Proposals may be for work in any medium. Please submit a one page description of your project idea: a sketch of the proposed project; a resume; and documentation of your previous work (10-20 slides or images on CD, please send images at lowest resolution so they open quickly, or a 3-5 minute NTSC VHS video or DVD). Please include a self addressed stamped envelope for the return of your work. You will be notified by email of your involvement in the exhibition so please include an email address with your materials. Exit Art is not responsible for returning works submitted with out a SASE.
