SMART Project Space reopens to the public on the 3rd September 2005. Having=
purchased the building of the former Pathological Anatomical Laboratories =
on the Wilhelmina Hospital area in the Old West of Amsterdam, SMART Project=
Space appointed Peter Sas Architects to transform the 4000m2 building into=
700m2 exhibition spaces, 5 cinemas, 12 studios, 2 project rooms, a media-l=
ab and production studio, cafe/restaurant and a members club. Having relo=
cating to its 3rd building, the itinerant years are over and SMART Project =
Space is here to stay.
To celebrate this event SMART Project Space launches ADAM - an internationa=
l exhibition of contemporary art, committed to the development and realizat=
ion of 30 new projects that engage with the situational context of everyday=
life. All the artists have been commissioned to appropriate and re-interp=
ret the socio-political conditions of Amsterdam, questioning cultural and s=
ocial identity at a given place and at a particular moment in time. Taking =
the lively and dynamic infrastructure of the city as a starting point, atte=
ntion is drawn to the specificity of the local context and the expression o=
f a multi-faceted city, filled with a wealth of cultures, languages and soc=
ial confrontations. ADAM is an examination of cultural space, addressing is=
sues of location and habitation, questioning ideas about where we live and =
how we live, taking perspectives which are emotional, cultural and symbolic=
. ADAM reflects the moment and takes as its point of departure the dynamics=
of art-as-activity, whereby modes of action lead to new ways of understand=
ing aspects of contemporary artistic production in both the public and priv=
ate space. ADAM harbors the idea of trans-nationality on a local level, tak=
ing into account the very specific history of Amsterdam as a city. Ignacy S=
achs observed that "cities are like people, they belong to the urban specie=
s but they have their unique personality". It is this uniqueness which is c=
onceived; mirroring shared cultural, psychological and spatial structures a=
nd reflecting the wider social and political conditions both locally and gl=
obally. For further information on ADAM visit http://www.adamsterdam.net
