Inspired by Walter Benjamin, who in 1936 described Dada as a "ballistic" art form, Media Ballistics is a creative attempt to reach out and "shock" people into clearer ways of seeing amid a world over-whelmed by a symbolic minefield of perpetual distraction.

All media makers face this problem, whether they sell soap, package politicians, or attempt to advance awareness and activism in an age of spin. The theory and practice of media ballistics is critically important to media artists who raise social consciousness and promote public discussion.

The media ballistics approach is not only to discover the trajectories by which a media maker reaches an intended audience, it is also to find the arcs of flight that will encourage people to stop being an audience, refuse spectatorship, and become active and engaged citizens of the world.

This exhibit catalog represents each students' attempt to create media works that meet these goals.
