SymbioticA Biotech Art Seminar

At University of Wollongong, Faculty of Creative Arts and
School of Biological Sciences. Rm 102
A seminar exploring biotechnology and art, 'aesthetics and ethics'
will be held on the first day of the Symbiotica Biotech Art Workshop.
Speakers at the seminar include: Oron Catts, Director, Symbiotica,
talking on 'Tissue Culture and Bioart', Dr Anna Munster, Senior
Lecturer, School of Art History and Theory, College of Fine Arts,
University of NSW, talking on 'Open bodies, closed cultures: bioart,
the life sciences and the politics of intellectual property'and
Associate Professor Susan Dodds, school of Philosophy UOW, Chair,
University Ethics Policy Committee, with her talk "Stem cells and big
picture bioethics: public interest, public consultation and liberal
democracy" which will explore the Big Picture Bioethics project in
relation to human embryonic stem cell research legislation.
The seminar will introduce participants to issues and concepts
relating to contemporary art practices and ethical issues relating to
the manipulation of life. Discussion can open to broader
philosophical and ethical implications into the extent of human
intervention with other living things. Please note this is a public

The University of Western Australia.
Oron Catts is an artist/researcher and a curator. Co-founder and Artistic
Director of SymbioticA - The Art & Science Collaborative Research Laboratory
at the School of Anatomy & Human Biology, University of Western Australia,
he also founded the Tissue Culture and Art Project in 1996. He has exhibited
and published internationally.

Susan Dodds is Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of
Wollongong. Her research focuses on the intersections of bioethics,
political theory and feminism. Her recent publications include work
on research ethics, reproductive technology, commodification of human
stem cells, aged care and democratic policy development. She is
currently engaged in a four year ARC Discovery Project entitled: Big
Picture Bioethics: policy making and liberal democracy with
colleagues from Dalhousie University (Canada) and the University of
Sydney.
Dr. Anna Munster

University of NSW
Anna Munster is a researcher, writer, artist and educator in the
areas of new media, art and science and cultural and political
theory. She is senior lecturer in the School of Art History and
Theory, College of Fine Arts, UNSW. She recently co-edited an issue
on 'Biopolitics' for the online journal Culture Machine and has
published on bioart, ethics and politics. Her book, Materializing New
Media: Embodiment and Information Aesthetics (Hanover, NH: University
Press of New England) will be publsihed in 2006. She is a facilitator
of the Australasian critical networks culture discussion list
'fibreculture'.
