SMART Project Space, Galerie Diana Stigter & Artimo invite you to the book =
launch of Hit & Run / SMART Project Space and Void / Amie Dicke on Saturday=
27th November 2004 at 8pm, followed by a reception party with snacks, drin=
ks and music.
Hit & Run features projects by the artists Dave Allen, Gustavo Artigas, Fab=
ienne Audeoud, Mark Bain, Marc Bijl, James Beckett, Alicia Framis, Funky =
Projects, Begona Munoz, Dan Shipsides, Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan=
, Debora Warner, Yvonne Droge Wendel. All projects were prepared and exec=
uted in Istanbul between 23rd June and 28th July 2004.
The series of performances and interventions offered an appealing perspecti=
ve within the context of the city's vibrancy and its public life. Regarding=
the geographical and historical position and importance of Constantinople =
and Istanbul as barrier and bridge between Europe and Asia, the interventio=
ns generated a dialogue wherein cultural differences were bridged via the g=
eneral structures that bind our social lives.
Platform Garanti's program in 2004 is one which explores the borders of ins=
titutional hospitality. Vasif Kortun drew a parallel between Platform Garan=
ti in Istanbul and SMART Project Space in Amsterdam in terms of aims and id=
eology and invited SMART Project Space to create a program for Platform tha=
t would take place during the course of one month, implying that the space =
would be given over to a foreign institution not aware of the nuances of th=
e local discourse that would prepare the program from another country, to t=
hen execute it in Istanbul and subsequently disappear from the scene as qui=
ckly again.
"We had chosen SMART Project Space as a partner institution that would make=
our weaknesses evident with their sophisticated internet technology, publi=
c accessibility and experience, but also as a comparable institution with a=
residency and exhibition program that we felt was as reckless as ours. Wha=
t we had not realized before that, as a temporarily itinerant institution -=
in the process of moving to a new space - SMART Project Space would make i=
tself at home in Istanbul" (Vasif Kortun, introduction to Hit & Run)
Hit & Run is published by SMART Project Space and distributed by Artimo and=
Idea Books and comprises of full colour images of all the projects realise=
d throughout Istanbul, including introduction texts by Vasif Kortun and Tho=
mas Peutz and artist texts by Una Henry and Thomas Peutz. Hit & Run was org=
anised by SMART Project Space, Amsterdam in collaboration with Platform Gar=
anti Contemporary Art Centre, Istanbul.
Video streams of all Hit & Run performances and interventions are available=
on the SMART Project Space website: www.smartprojectspace.net/exhibitions/=
