Leonardo Electronic Almanac: October 2004
ISSN#1071-4391
art | science | technology - a definitive voice since 1993
http://lea.mit.edu
In LEA's October issue, editor in chief, Nisar Keshvani discusses the
Leonardo Educators Initiative and its various components the Leonardo
Abstracts Service, Leonardo International Academic Community mailing list
and faculty alerts, and free subscription for faculty and students.
The Leonardo Abstracts Service announces its first cycle of shortlisted
peer-reviewed theses abstracts by Peter Anders, Elisa Giaccardi, Fatima
Lasay and Maureen A. Nappi. These abstracts were peer reviewed by the
2004/2005 panel consisting of Pau Alsina, Jody Berland, Sean Cubitt, Frieder
Nake, Stephen Petersen and chaired by Professor Pinkel.
This month's central feature "Art by Telephone: From Static to Mobile
Interfaces," written by Adriana de Souza e Silva piece discusses the
evolution of artworks using telephones, bringing her focus especially to
contemporary works using mobile phone technology. Her investigation explores
the ramifications of such technology on our notions of space, time and
social interaction and the interface between physical and digital spaces.
In Leonardo Reviews, enjoy a small but rich sampling of the stunning
diversity of topics being discussed by the review panel: including reviews
of a conference on Indian artist Sardari Lal Parasher, a conference on art,
science and spirituality, and a documentary film about U.S.
activist/author Howard Zinn.

* Multimedia Performance *
LEA is inviting papers and artworks that showcase MultiMedia Performance.
This category includes works which span a range of practices, which
challenge the way performance has heretofore been defined and examines the
ways in which new technologies have opened up the meaning and practice of
performance. We expect that performance includes a live component, be it on
line, in an interactive installation, or on stage.
Deadline for submissions: 10 December 2004 More info:

artists and scientists, or artist/scientist teams, whose work addresses pain
in all its forms. Projects of interest include aesthetic works that address
subjective experiences, social conditions, and cultural constructions of
pain. Projects on the art of healing are of interest as well, especially
multidisciplinary approaches that integrate Eastern and Western traditions.
We will also consider current health science, computer science, and
engineering research relevant to these topics.

related to the North/South divide, age, gender, etc.

What is LEA?
———————-
For over a decade, Leonardo Electronic Almanac (LEA) has thrived as an
international peer-reviewed electronic journal and web archive, covering the
interaction of the arts, sciences and technology.
LEA emphasizes rapid publication of recent work and critical discussion on
topics of current excitement. Many contributors are younger scholars and
artists, and there is a slant towards shorter, less academic texts.
Contents include Leonardo Reviews, edited by Michael Punt, Leonardo Research
Abstracts of recent Ph.D. and Masters theses, curated Galleries of current
new media artwork, and special issues on topics ranging from Artists and
Scientists in times of War, to Zero Gravity Art, to the History of New
Media.
