Dear all,
We're getting together next MONDAY, July 26 to hear Julian Bleecker
discuss some of his current WiFi-based art-technology projects.
WiFi.Bedouin, currently in development as part of a Fellowship
at the Annenberg Center's Institute for Media Literacy, is a mobile,
portable WiFi-based service that is deliberately not on the public
internet.
This project is designed to investigate the possibilities for new kinds of
social software that takes advantage of the proliferation of
WiFi-enabled technology.
WiFi.ArtCache, which will be featured at the Lower Manhattan Cultural
Council's Spectropolis art event in October, is a "disconnected" WiFi node
that contains digital Flash-based media that changes its behaviors based
on the activity of people participating. Because it is off the public
internet, one must be in physical proximity to interact with the media. In
this way, the project intends to create a social experience that mixes
physical and virtual idioms.
Julian Bleecker has been involved in technology design for over 15 years,
creating mobile, wireless, and networked-based applications for a range of
organizations within the entertainment, brand marketing, and advertising
industries. His expertise is technology implementation, innovation and
concept development. This fall, he begins a faculty appointment at the
University of Southern California in the Interactive Media Division and
the Critical Theory departments. He has a Ph.D. from the History of
Consciousness Board at the University of California Santa Cruz, has a
Masters of Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a
BS in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.
