Gack! I am going to stay up too late! Being politically
active in two countries is interesting. Well maybe like
interested. Well I actually to ask my friends to vote anything
but conservative.
I would have been on my way north except that yesterday there
were a couple of very good US Supreme Court descisions that
pretty much reined would be King George Bush. I was amazed that
in one dissent Justice Scalia held for the trial for treason xor
release of Padilla. It is very hard to get a treason charge to
stick. They registered their disagreement but joined the majority with
the less absolute descision. That's Ok because it was hard to see Padilla
as pure as the driven snow. He really did want to do
nasty things. He was just incompetenly nasty. I suspect he was let to run
around for so long so he would identify more people who
be really dangerous. The other guy Hamdi looks like he may very well have
been a relief worker caught up in a sweep and handed over as
a Taliban because someone was getting bucks for it.
I hope we can get rid of Bush. At least Kerry will be sensible.
Bush justs acts as if he is a King. He pays no attention to any
criticism, is unwilling to compromise. That and the attempted
shredding of the Bill of Rights have been disheartening.
Of course I know lots of people in Canada who sort of believe the
courts should have very very limited power and that one's rights
come from the Legislature and not the Charter or the Courts, I am
somewhat uncomfortable with that idea. But I remember having lots
of rights on paper and being kind of harassed in West Virginia but I never
felt that way in California or British Columbia.
Anyway thanks for the igloo offer, if it gets real bad down here
I may head north. But I am holding out hope that things will go well. But
yeah it is good the Conservatives did not get in The Great White North. I
read the NDP statements and on paper they seem sort of the loosest and
most lefty party up there. So I would probably fit in. A friend of mine
had "Landed Immigarnt" status but I never went after that.
Have Fun,
Sends Steve
