AWAY by Caroline Broadhead
LEEDS METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY GALLERY

Friday 14 November - Saturday 13 December Admission Free

Caroline Broadhead has risen to international prominence with her trademark floating dresses and shadow play. Commissioned by the Gallery, Broadhead presents further reflection of spatial relationships between the body and its environment by using ordinary materials and techniques to create works exploring the paradoxical nature of clothing. Her gossamer dresses suspended in space reflect the transience of life, like frozen spectres they resist the effects of gravity. Broadhead questions how clothing is both public and intensely personal; creating pieces that are half-seen almost camouflaged in their environment and ultimately reflect traces of presence.

AWAY crosses the boundaries between applied and fine arts and explores the nature of memory.

Broadhead continues her investigation into the shadow to question issues of perception, transformation and reality. As ephemeral shadows define the architectural space Broadhead effectively links the three distinct gallery spaces. ALWAYS is a ghostly installation that plays tricks with the viewers' spatial awareness.

>From early beginnings as a jeweller, she moved into working with textiles, winning the Jerwood Prize for Applied Arts in 1997. She has exhibited in Norway, Denmark, Japan and New York. For the Gallery Caroline Broadhead will be creating new work in AWAY, as well as revisiting recent pieces which cross the boundaries between applied and fine arts.
