Harvestworks is pleased to announce our Surround Sound Series, a continuation of our "Listen In" Series for Summer 2003. This performance and installation series invites artists to explore the possibilities of a surround sound system in their work. The system is the emerging standard for multi-channel music and installation pieces in museums and galleries. In this series, artists expand boundaries of sound and explore ways to humanize digital technology through interactivity and mixing hi- and lo-tech music production.

shimmering#4 is one in a series of aural contemplations on risk, tension and human nature. This work arises from a series of explorations begun in 1999. Kenta Nagai begins by producing feedback with tiny condenser microphones whose initial output is controlled with extremely subtle hand gestures. Using an assortment of foot pedals and digital controls, Nagai harmonizes and orchestrates layers of sound. Sampled feedback and continuously self-generating new tones are used together in creating the composition.

Kenta Nagai's interest in microphone feedback has to do with relationships: microphone
