The Chapman Brothers have been dropped as Britain's official artists in
Iraq over questions of bad taste. They raise some very pertinent issues
in this article.

I am amazed that they were ever proposed in the first place. What state is
going to let two crazy mixed up artists loose as official War Artists.
At the same time, I think that their attack on McQueen is in incredibly poor
taste. So they didn't get selected, so they attack the artist who did.
Ho, hum. Storm in teacup as usual.
Cheers,
Ivan

from an American perspective, the simple fact that you Brits have a
war artist at all is simply amazing. is there such a thing in the US?
I doubt it, and if there were I'm sure we wouldn't consider anyone as
interesting as or as potentially controversial as the chapmans.
we'd have some boring nobody who works good in bronze so as to get
the full amount of *glory* out of Bush's bullshit war.

wasn't meaning to imply that McQueen sucks. I think I've only seen
one of his videos at a show last year at PS1 (contemporary art museum
in Queens, NYC) at this exhibition Video Acts

Fox News?
Hi Ivan
re:
their attack on McQueen is in incredibly poor taste
They were selected and then vetoed which is usually regarded as an excuse for a
moan.
I share their disappointment. Though I wouldn't have risked being so impolite,
in case it was misinterpreted as sour grapes ;-)
I was surprised that they got as far as they did, a rare match of crazies-
artists and warlords alike.
Now I will have to imagine what the results would have been.
cheers
Ruth

Absolutely, Ruth.
I'm not a great Chapman brothers fan but this is quite
clearly a bit of political censorship at the same time
as the govt tries to do an
East-Europe-before-the-wall-came-down on the Beeb (
who weren't, lets face it, exactly anti war) and as
Tony bLIAR looks daily more & more Pinnochio like .
SO.. on this one I'm a 100% with the Chapman brothers
and frankly shame on Steve McQueen if he takes the
job.
Do the selection committee have an e mail ? We should
at least send letters of protest & encourage others to
do so.
