50. PULA FILM FESTIVAL

cinemania[c] 2003:the second edition

cinemania[c] is an independent project consisting of exhibition and screeni=
ngs, that is organized as the supporting programme to the 50th Pula Film Fe=
stival, taking place at the gallery of the Multimedia Centre LUKA, Istarska=
30, Pula.

introduction

The relationship between art and cinema is the relationship between art and=
technology, and their history is the history of experiments in various fie=
lds. What developed from this symbiosis is the most ephemeral art of all - =
"the art of time". Considering the traces films left in our visual culture,=
the exhibition is going to explore the experience of watching movies, as w=
ell as the way cinematographic aesthetics shaped and continues to shape our=
mind, affecting our common perception of the world.cinemania[c] is the pro=
duct of a meta-media society that recycles its existing media images and wh=
ere each work of art functions as a research lab in which the raw material =
is critically questioned and analysed. It is a "cut&paste" culture that inh=
erited avant-garde techniques of editing and collage and joined them with t=
he techniques of sampling and digital manipulation. In that way, the digita=
l context as digitally expanded cinema protects and developes the tradition=
of independent, avantgarde and experimental cinema. But, more that anythin=
g else cinemania[c] is a hommage to Film/Movies, and we use this exhibition=
to show our love to it.

call for artists

Artists are invited to send the work that relates to the topics of cinema, =
cinephilia, cinemania, to the experience of watching films. By conceptualiz=
ing visual culture and moving images the exhibition will creatively engage =
with our experience of films and tackle our relationship towards specific f=
ilms or cinema in general, different genres, film language, formal qualitie=
s.The exhibition will also address our understanding of society through pop=
ular culture and deal with the concepts of time and space as well as the lo=
oking strategies and presentation. By using various media formats like pict=
ures, photographs, installation, video, animation, scratch tapes, net.art, =
presented either on CD ROM, VHS, DVD it is our intent that, through quotati=
on and intertextuality, a new body is created which will demonstrate that c=
orrelation of film with other art forms can ensure an after life for the or=
iginal work, long after its screening. cinemania[c] takes into account the =
role cinema has had so far in our visual culture…and pays the homage…
