<<apologies for any unintended duplications >>
Symposium: 1 July 2003
Approaching Aurora
- through science and spectacle, model and metaphor
a symposium looking at ways that artists explore natural phenomena
Organised by the Centre for Arts Research, Technology and Education (CARTE)
& DA2 Digital Arts Development Agency
This one day event will address current projects that deal with
natural phenomena.
'Approaching Aurora' will consider how complex experiences of natural
phenomena can be represented by artists and their collaborators.
Looking particularly at works about the aurora, we will explore how a
response to 'larger-than-life' occurrences may be examined and
communicated through creative work.
The Symposium will look at the ways artists approach these concerns
to create works that emphasise 'experiential' qualities, including
installation, networked and audio pieces. We will look at the way
artists respond to 'information' drawn from natural sources as raw
material for interpretation or investigation in their projects. We
will ask how choices are being made about what is being represented,
how material is aestheticised and how it is intended the audience
will perceive the resulting works.
Speakers:
Esa Turenen, (Finland) geophysicist, Sodankyla Geophysical
Observatory, Finland. - specialises in the scientific study of the
aurora borealis
Brian McClave, (UK) video maker - currently works with 3D video to
document aurora
Nina Czegledy, (Hungary/ Canada) artist and curator - works with
historical and contemporary approaches to the way the aurora is
perceived
Jean-Pierre Aube (Canada) sound artist - works with Very Low
Frequency Sound to record geomagnetic activity, including auroral
activity.
Luke Jerram (UK) artist - art works have explored the gravitational
force of the moon upon the earth and is currently researching
concepts of 'space'.
Honor Harger and Adam Hyde (UK) sound artists - currently developing
project to broadcast the sounds of space as observed through radio
astronomy
Tom Donaldson (UK) inventor and engineer, working with a
physics-based model to explore the aurora
Mark d'Inverno (UK) mathematician and computer scientist
collaborating on a project that visualises a new paradigm for
cellular biology through a mathematical model
Alice Angus (UK) artist and researcher contemporary perceptions of
geography, territory and landscape, including electromagnetic
activity.
Chairs: Peter Ride and Jane Prophet (CARTE)
