These historical references feel irrelevant. The Christianity that faces Islam today is totally different from the Crusades, etc., and furthermore, the division between Eastern and Western Europe seems to deal primarily with differences between economies and economic philosophies, rather than a deep religious-cultural gash across Europe. Maybe I'm wrong.
