De tentoonstelling loopt van 23 Februari tot 30 Maart, 2003
Kunstwerken zijn gestructureerd volgens allerlei perceptuele strategieen di=
e erop gericht zijn de blik van de kijker te vangen. De originele latijnse =
connotatie van het woord perceptie is 'vangen', of 'gevangen nemen'. Beeld=
en verleiden, bedriegen het oog soms, om op een andere manier te kijken, pe=
rspectieven in te nemen. Duchamp zette tegenover de afstandelijke modernist=
ische observeerder de geimpliceerde manier van kijken van de regardeur: de =
regardeur is de kijker die het kunstwerk activeert in de daad van het kijke=
n. Oprechte vormen van bedrog zijn al lang voor Duchamp van grote waarde vo=
or de kunst om andere vormen van realiteit te creeeren en het kijken op zic=
hzelf te laten reflecteren. Zeker nu we in een tijd leven waarin we voortdu=
rend bloot gesteld worden aan een overdaad van visuele informatie, is het b=
elangrijk te begrijpen hoe het visuele veld verpakt wordt om ons voor zich =
in te nemen.
In deze tentoonstelling zijn werken samen gebracht die op allerlei manieren=
de activiteit van het kijken dubbelzinnig in het spel brengen. Het zijn 'o=
ogvallen', die de ambiguiteit van het kijken zelf laten zien. Ze spelen een=
spel met de blik van de kijker, door hun eigen mechanisme op het spel te z=
etten, want het waarnemen van de val is altijd een moment van zelf reflecti=
e. A Snare for the Eye wil zeggen dat het oog in de val gelokt wordt maar o=
ok dat de blik ernaar verlangt betrapt te worden, zijn val zoekt. Eenmaal g=
evangen in de val moeten we onszelf onvermijdelijk bezig houden met de cond=
ities van de val, of plezier beleven aan het betrapt zijn.

The exhibition runs from 23rd February till 30th March, 2003
Visual artworks employ specific perceptual strategies directed to catch the=
gaze of the beholder. The original latin connotation of the word perceptio=
n is 'catching', or 'taking captive'. Images are visual constructions that =
seduce the eye, (mis)leading it to see viewpoints and perspectives that com=
e into effect within their given cultural and historical context.
Duchamp posed against the distanced modernist spectator the implicit look o=
f the regardeur: the regardeur is the observer who activates the artwork in=
the act of looking. Sincere forms of tricking have always been essential t=
o art long before Duchamp. They are extremely valuable in rendering differe=
nt views of reality, throwing the eye back onto itself. Especially now we l=
ive in a time in which we are daily confronted with an overload of visual i=
nformation, awareness of how our field of vision is packaged to draw us in =
has become crucial
This exhibition focuses on works that explicitly bring the act of looking =
into play by making visible the ambiguity of looking itself. They play a ga=
me with the gaze of the spectator, thereby putting their own mechanisms on =
the spot, as perception of the trap always involves a moment of self-reflec=
tion. A Snare for the Eye means the eye is ensnaring the thing that traps i=
t. The question arises then how to behave in the trap. If we get ourselves =
caught in a trap, we inevitable have to concern ourselves with the conditio=
ns of the trap, or simply enjoy being snared…
