content: politics of religion|art | soft meaning's end in liminality
When Marx called organized religion the 'opiate' I don't know if he realized that he had just synthesized heroin.
Organized religion's vested interests come with the package any way to 'look' at it, but this doesn't mean that it's not a positive influence on humankind. Organized religion is just a mixed blessing in that regard, that's all.
+
Another way to see it is that the grievances of the past were not actually religion, but politics. This is a bad argument, because then "religion" becomes anything the speaker wishes it to be. A "slippery slope" argument, if you will, as throughout intellectual history/reconstruction and rationalization of old dogmas/ clinging to anachronistic catechisms…they have all used this argument. The phenomenon of "religion" just retreats more and more into something that can't be pinned down on anything, a liminal non-idea, a sign.
+
This "soft" definition of religion is even more true for art.
