Re: Music For Deaf People

This is an interesting concept. A few weeks ago on another email list, a
group of us were discussing synaesthesia and the connection with the
paintings of Kandinsky, the music of John Frusciante, etc.

Since I myself am deaf, I always ask people, out of curiosity, to tell me
what music sounds like to them, phonetically and visually. A friend went to
listen to the local symphony play "Il Quattro Stagioni" (Vivaldi) and I
asked him to describe the Four Seasons to me. He said:

Spring: flower petals brushed on skin
Summer: the pulse of leaves and vines growing
Autumn: a wisp of smoke
Winter: like the Carl Sandburg poem "the fog creeps in … on little cat's
feet"

I'm a big fan of the conceptual artist Sophie Calle – one of her projects
was to ask blind people what they thought was the most beautiful thing to
see and then she went out and photographed it. One man told her he thought
the most beautiful thing to see would be the sea stretching on forever to
the horizon.
