Re: DeCSS

The reporting of this case has been full of inaccuracies and misunderstandings and so on and on and on. Even DVD-J himself has humbly tried to put things right to avoid the unpopular label of claiming exploits he never performed – the code was broken by a German hacker and DVD-J only implemented an interface and posted the resulting software, DeCSS, on the Web. (The program was almost instantly refined and DeCSS, in version 1.0 if I may, thereby rendered obsolete.) According to the DMCA and the evil geniuses of Hollywood narratives, this is where a "crime" was comitted. Having read the spotty reports in the Norwegian media, who actually took precious little interest in the case, it is important to keep in mind that Norway has NO law equivalent to the DMCA. This was, unlike the recent ElcomSoft trial that also ended in aquittal, no test for that legislation, but rather an absurd excercise in global coprorate interests. Keep in mind also that the Eric Corley, of Emmanuel Goldstein fame from 2600, LOST his case for posting DeCSS on the Web here in the States.
