NEGATIVLAND: OUR FAVORITE THINGS
(or alternatively titled NEGATIVLAND: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE or
NEGATIVLAND: CREATIVE MEDIA RESISTANCE)
A 90-minute film/lecture presentation by Mark Hosler, founding member of
Negativland. Mark will be in person to present the program, with Q and A
to follow.
Made by Negativland in collaboration with various other experimental
filmmakers, OUR FAVORITE THINGS (or NEGATIVLAND: PAST, PRESENT AND
FUTURE or NEGATIVLAND: CREATIVE MEDIA RESISTANCE) is a presentation of a
series of short videos in which Negativland carries its love for found
sounds and their critical and humorous re-use of mass culture over into
the world of experimental movie making.
Mark Hosler, a founding member of Negativland, will be in person to show
these films in a video formatted lecture presentation that illustrates
the many creative projects, hoaxes, pranks and "culture jamming" that
Negativland has been doing since 1980. The presentation covers issues of
media-literacy, creative and humorous anti-corporate art/activism, the
role of advertising and corporate power in our lives, intellectual
property issues, and the evolution of art, law and resistance in a media
saturated multi-national world.
Even if you've never heard of Negativland, if you are interested in
these issues you are sure to find this fun and inspiring presentation
worth your time and attention. None of the short films shown will ever
be seen on MTV and much of it is visually in the same legal grey area
that Negativland has explored with sound for the last 20 years.
More about Negativland:
In the last 22 years, Negativland have released 19 CDs, two books
("Fair Use: The Story Of The Letter U And The Numeral 2" and
"Deathsentences Of The Polished And Structurally Weak") and have been
sued twice for copyright infringement. They have become outspoken
artists activists (particularly in the world of intellectual property),
providing a soundtrack to the growing global movement against corporate
power in our lives. They were the subject of the 1995 feature film
"Sonic Outlaws" by Craig Baldwin, and composed the soundtrack/sound
design for a critical 1997 documentary on advertising, "The Ad and the
Ego". Negativland coined the term "culture jamming" in 1984, and this
phrase is now often used to describe the work of many different media
artists and activists.
Negativland is interested in unusual noises and images (especially ones
that are close at hand), unusual ways to restructure such things and
combine them with their own music, and mass media transmissions which
have become sources, and subjects, of much of their work. Negativland
covets insightful wackiness from anywhere, low-tech approaches whenever
possible, telling humor, and vital social targets of any kind. Without
ideological preaching, Negativland often becomes a subliminal culture
sampling service concerned with making art about everything we aren't
supposed to notice.
