What does an American look like? It depends on who you ask. The Con Artist Collective shares its take on this nation’s populace with “American Identity 1.0”, a collection of portraits of American people. These portraits range from the traditional to the avant-garde and each gives a small slice of contemporary American humanity. They explore the schism between a white-washed history portrayed by the media and the reality of defining yourself in a national culture.
It’s strangely appropriate that the show is curated by a foreigner. Gonzalo Sepulveda was born in Chile, but has a long love affair with the United States where he has lived for more than a decade. “American Identity 1.0” presents a critical view of the American experience from an outsider’s perspective.
