The Internet is growing up.
Long gone are the days of dial-up, Napster, Friends Reunited, and Geocities. Their memories and architecture are archived on servers, relegated to nostalgia lists and paraded as icons of Internet infancy.

We’ve put our toys away and now we mean business.

In our “increasingly connected world” - the consequence of capital investments into software, hardware, startups and apps - our clicks turn into dollars, our Twitter followers become our social capital and our Paypals run Alibaba’s Chinese factories.

The Internet is business. The tools, platforms and protocols we use run on data capital; data usage is our new economy. Collectively we face challenges to privacy, identity, ownership and attention. We are all implicated and there are no easy answers.

CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND examines how artists use new media to investigate social and political systems to find their position within and in relation to these larger systems. In this fuzzy zone of information production, where boundaries and roles are increasingly blurred, the exhibition deploys humour and critique to reconfigure our ideas about our current digital economic climate.

GLITCH at RUA RED is Ireland’s premier new media festival and brings together leading media and technology artists, curators, and researchers with audiences to explore emerging and established contemporary cultural and critical issues that arise from art’s intersections with and investigations of digital technology. Glitch is kindly funded by Arts Council Ireland and the South Dublin County Council.

This year GLITCH features:

ADDIE WAGENKNECHT is an American artist based in Austria, whose work explores the tension between forms of culture and technology. Wagenknecht is a member of the Free Art & Technology (F.A.T.) Lab and chairs the Open Hardware Summit at MIT. Her work has been exhibited internationally at MuseumsquarXer Vienna, The Istanbul Biennial, and Rua Red Dublin. She has been featured in press such as TIME Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, The Economist, and The New York Times. She has a Masters degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University, and has previously held fellowships at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in New York City, Culture Lab UK, Institute HyperWerk for PostIndustrial Design, Basel (CH), and The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University. BREDA LYNCH is a visual artist living and working in Limerick, Ireland. She received her BA Hons degree at the Crawford College of Art, Cork, MA from Chelsea College of Art, London and an MPhil from the University of Wolverhampton, England. She has mounted solo shows in Ireland and Northern Ireland and her work has been included in group shows in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Turkey, Thailand China and the USA. Most notable of these shows were the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (BEFF) 2008 and the Irish Pavilion at World Expo, Shanghai 2010. She has been a recipient of the Artists Bursary Award from the Arts Council of Ireland and a number of Limerick City Council Artist Bursary Awards and was a prize-winner at Iontas in 2007. She has curated art exhibitions, including ‘Darkness Visible’ with Ann Mulrooney at the Galway Arts Centre commissioned by the Galway Arts Festival in 2008, ‘A Poem of Friendship’ at Occupy Space, Limerick 2010, ‘Excavate’, commissioned by Cork Printmakers and Cork City Museum at Cork City Museum 2010 and ‘Other Drawings’ at Ormston House part of Creative Limerick scheme 2012.

FERGAL BRENNAN works in time-based visual media. He incorporates traditional hand-drawn or stop-motion animation with the precision of modern digital film technology and programming. His practice is focused on the exploration of film and animation as a graphic language and communicaXon tool, with all of the political, social and aesthetic implications that arise from it.
