transmediale festival of art and digital culture in 2014 suggests that digital revolution is over. From the other side humanity approaches cultures loaded by transhumanistic and posthumanistic ideas. How one exists at the edge of ending and starting moments, shapes and attitudes? What is the dimension we live in and what is the state of being in between?

With above questions we refer to transmediale festival, offering in 2014 an “afterglow,” the ambivalent state of digital culture in present (http://www.transmediale.de/festival). In more expanded context, we refer to Deleuze and Guattari’s notions of “rhizome”, “nomad”, “in-betweenness” and “reterritorialization” (Deleuze & Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus, 1987). Latterly these conceptions influenced contemporary thought and are often used by theorists (e.g. B. Stiegler, K. Hayles) to define contents, functions and shapes of digital/media culture.

Between January 29th and February 4th the Top association in Berlin is hosting Migrating Art Academies laboratory “state in between” and invites emerging artists to experience the proposed theme in the framework of transmediale. During one week long laboratory participants will attend the festival’s conference and will research appearances of reterritorialized social constructs and digital cultures. A public event scheduled for the 4th of February in the OKK project space (kritische-kunst.org) will bring freshly developed ideas and forms for further examination of new media contexts. As an outcome we expect some kind of “images of thoughts”, a shifting configuration of media topics, elements, formats and methodologies.

“state in between” is led by Irma Stanaityte from Vilnius Academy of Arts. Contributing to the laboratory are Hannes Brunner (Weissensee Art Academy Berlin), Wolfgang Knapp (Institute of Art in Context, University of Berlin) and Mindaugas Gapševičius (Top association).
