The Brick Lane Gallery is pleased to present our second ever WORKS ON PAPER group exhibition, featuring a selection of printmakers and illustrators from the UK and abroad, in an exciting and diverse exhibition of these mediums.
This exhibition will explore the more traditional mediums of printmaking and illustration such as the pencil and charcoal drawings of Ailsa Rhiannon or the fish themed monoprints of Welsch-American artist Deborah Withey.
It will also include new media interpretations such as the digital illustrations by local artist Paul Pateman and Amanda Mocci, as well as artists who combine hand worked ink drawings with digital colouring – as seen in Shan Jiang’s beautiful illustrations inspired by the artists memory of China in the 80s and 90s.
Many of the artists including DW combine a graphic design background with a passion and the skills of fine art in order to bring together contemporary fine art pieces in an accessible way for audiences. London based DW runs a successful graphic design studio in London, and shows work with bold graphic colour and raw narrative elements as original silkscreen prints as seen through a ‘graphic-eye’ in this exhibition.
Other local artists include Aaron Facey - a self taught portrait/figure artist born and raised in London. His works reflect his fascination with human facial features and detail. Inspirations are mostly drawn from urban culture, human expression and emotion. Also working with portraiture but from different shores, Lisbon born Cristiana Baptista combines a monotonous spectrum of colours and curious portraits to focus on how certain realities influences our minds.
The growing popularity of street and urban art styles such as stencil art, graffiti, comic-book style illustration and graphics also form prevalent influences in many of these artists’ works. For example, seen in Joy La Jaxx’s black and white ink illustrations reflecting endearing imaginary characters.
Our Works on Paper exhibition will take place between the 10th and 20th October 2013. You are warmly invited to join us for our event and opening preview on Wednesday the 9th October between 6pm – 8.30pm.
