Steve Turner Contemporary is pleased to present Interstitial, a debut solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Tyler Adams in which the artist explores the spatial, material and visual nature of sound.

Interstitial draws extensively from the everyday environment by utilizing commonplace building materials and familiar sonic textures that reference the interstitial architectural spaces that function as transitions between inside and outside. The title piece of the show uses various lengths of spiral ductwork that resonate like organ pipes, excited by slowly swinging speaker pendulums propelled by fans. The result is a meditative and seductive drone that is both foreground and background to the entire exhibition. Other works include speakers that beat like hearts, breathe puffs of air, shake, rumble, or generate visual imagery.

The upstairs gallery features a debut of Adams’ ongoing work Pop!, a series of short videos with surround-sound that have been created over the course of several years. Each video uses the brief moment of a balloon pop to explore and document the acoustic identity of a variety of environments, examining the subtle ways in which a simple pop reveals the volume, material, and formal features of a space.

Tyler Adams (born Los Angeles, 1980) graduated with a BFA from California Institute of the Arts, an MFA from University of California, Los Angeles, and an MS in Architectual Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2012 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to work in Vienna, Austria. His work has recently been exhibited at the The New World Symphony Miami, Taubman Museum of Art, MuseumsQuartier Wien, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, DOX Centre for Contemporary Art Prague, and ZKM Karlsruhe.
