DesignX at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair

  • Location:
The Javitz Convention Center, 655 W 34th St New York, NY 10001, New York, New York, 10001, US

Over the course of four days, DesignX, a series of hands-on workshops at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), will offer affordable, entry-level classes in the newest digital design tools in a purpose-built classroom at the Fair. Ranging from one to two hours in length, and beginning at $69 per class, the seminars are suitable for professional designers, artists, and hobbyists alike.

Tools and techniques such as 3D Printing, cloud collaboration, and 3D design for production represent the cutting edge of contemporary design practices. While software applications such as photo and video editing have been increasingly adopted into home and widespread professional use in recent years, 3D applications such as modeling and prototyping may still feel beyond the reach of creatives of all experience levels. DesignX will offer attendees the basic-to-intermediate instruction required to bring these techniques into their professional practice and lives.

In one example, “Matter Programmers: 4D Printing & Bio-Molecular Self Assembly”, taught by TED Fellow Skylar Tibbits, will present visionary designers and artists with the potential for objects that construct themselves into more complex forms once exposed to water, heat, or air. In “3D Printed Fabrics" designer Francis Bitonti introduces the capability for 3D printing within textiles to intrepid inventors, manufacturers, and even fashion designers to the potential for integrating intricate 3D texturing and forms into fabric. As a third and final example, “Hands on Desktop Prototyping” by Ronnie Parsons and Gil Akos at Mode Lab brings the basics on translating a digital model into a physical object from one’s home through rapid prototyping, and includes hands-on work with a desktop 3D printer.

Following registration, course participants will also be granted free admission to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair featuring over 500 exhibitors from more than 30 countries.
