It’s a Jackie Thing is an exhilarating look back at the Meatpacking District’s seedier and less gentrified past, when the neighborhood played host to notorious gay sex clubs, streetwalkers, and other fringe cultures. The video documents the antic celebrity impersonations of performers at the weekly party Jackie 60, which ran for a decade in the 1990s and was so popular that the organizers – DJ Johnny Dynell, Chi Chi Valenti, designer Kitty Boots and choreographer Richard Move – opened their own nightclub for the purpose, the iconic Mother, which closed in 2000.

Artist and filmmaker Charles Atlas was born in St. Louis and has produced a pioneering body of films, videos and collaborative projects. Atlas worked as the resident filmmaker for Merce Cunningham’s company for ten years before making Hail the New Puritan, his landmark portrait of dancer Michael Clark. He has collaborated with dancers and performers, such as Yvonne Rainer, Marina Abramovic, Diamanda Galas, John Kelly, Leigh Bowery, and Antony. His work has been shown at international institutions, including MoMA, New York, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. His films were recently screened as part of the 2012 Whitney Biennial, his third inclusion in the bi-annual exhibition.

The W New York - Times Square sits on the site of an old piano factory converted into the popular nightclub Club USA, which was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. Opened in the fall of 1991 by Peter Gatien of The Limelight, it featured a NYC/Times Square motif, even down to grimy peep-show booths.
