Sophie Plimpton and the Rogue Space are pleased to present Memoraphilia on view 31 May – 1 June 2012 at 526 West 26th Street, 9E featuring: Pauline Hersart de la Villemarqué, Alison Nguyen, Frances F. Denny, Austin Power, Azmi Mert Erdem and Coco Karol.

These artists' work depict aspects of the relationship between memory and the body through video, photography, performance art, watercolor and sculpture. The artists portray visions of human recollections through varying mediums shadowing “Memoraphila”; a disposition to remembrance, or the love of things memorable. Behind each work, differing in its medium, lies the truth and reality of intimacy, its impact and consequences. These artists reveal the constant relay of memory, in all its gradations of hope and suffering. Remember, remember, this is now, and now and now, quoted from the journal of poet Sylvia Plath invites a guarded repetition, as do the diverse works of “Memoraphilia”, reminding us of the clamorous, cyclic quality of memories. Each work holds clues to deeper personal and social narratives, like skeletons hidden in the sand. In an act of artistic excavation, the works of “Memoraphillia”, uncover ideas akin to Multiple Trace Theory. This theory investigates tracing the memory, and in part explores the physical attributes of memory, which becomes part of the dialogue in “Memoraphilia”. The substance of memory is captured and explored through the artists’ powerful expressions this spring 2012.
