PANELS

The INDEX Festival Panels run every Wednesday throughout August 2011
at Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center in Manhattan from 7PM-8PM.

Each week we bring together artists, thinkers and practitioners who
specialize in this years theme of Landscape, Process and Preservation
within technology and art. The Panel Series provide a backbone for
discussion on these topics and lead us into the events which follow
throughout the month. While performances, exhibitions and screenings
touch on the themes within the festival, the INDEX Festival Panel
Series provides a forum to speak and respond back to the practitioners
about these issues. It is a means of  sharing through direct
conversation between panel participants but also  for the interested
public to engage in this dialog.

The First panel will open the festival on August 3, 2011.  Entitled,
The Festival, the INDEX Festival has invited an international panel of
participants from electronic arts festival and media arts theorists
from Canada, Germany and New York. The conversation will cover current
trends and issues within this niche area of curation for art festivals
around the world dealing with technology and art.

We welcome Malcolm Levy, founder of New Forms Festival in Vancouver,
Canada, Cornelia Lund, Berlin based media theorist, curator and founder
of Fluctuating Images, Ceci Moss, senior-editor of Rhizome from
2007-2011 and current Staff Writer, and Nathalie Bachand of Elektra
Festival in Montreal, Canada.

Panel 2 welcomes Jon Rafman, Ingo Gunther and Katja Loher, artists
who are exhibiting their work in the Worlds Real exhibition on 37th
Street, Manhattan throughout the INDEX Festival. The Mediated
Landscapes Panel will be moderated by Cornelia Lund. Cornelia has
curated, Animated Architecture, a screening at Millenium Film Workshop
on August 9. After the group discussion at 8:30, Jon Rafman will lead
us on a half hour tour of Second Life.

Panel 4 will close out the INDEX Festival Panel Series with a look
both forward and backward, into the preservation of digital born
artworks. A central issue for artists as well as art institutions and
archivists is finding a means of preserving artworks using technology.
The Archivists Round Table of New York has sponsored this panel
discussion that will delve into the subject and concerns around digital
preservation. The INDEX Festival welcomes Ryan Anthony Donaldson, Perry
Garvin, Jane Park and Malcolm Levy to speak about their specific
experience dealing with preservation within traditional and media art
institutions, art collections, art festivals and creative commons.

This event is part of the Index Festival (August 3-28, 2011)

The Index Festival will
transpire in August 2011 in New York City. Our aim is to bring together
individuals and groups who cognitively engage media culture. We welcome
the interdisciplinary, shared and accessible culture we are coming to
live in as a result of digital technology.  Our mission is to focus on
projects that blur the vocabulary of science and art, dissect the media
that describes our culture today, and to disseminate out from the
[cultural] institution, and further into the multi textural
international landscape.
