Venice, CA, April 2, 2011 (6pm to 12am) at SPARC Gallery ― The Roots and Wings Project (RAW) celebrates the opening of their new art exhibition IG•NITE: a study from street level, by bringing together the work of talented artists from L.A’s melting pot along with a showcase of live music, spoken word and innovative theater. IG•NITE: a study from street level stimulates dialogue, thought, and emotion through diverse cultural perspectives steeped in a contemporary urban vernacular. The mission of The Roots and Wings Project (RAW) is to speak to the truth and give voice to the unnamed and unspoken through socially transformative and politically charged art. All of the artists exhibited in this group show have closely worked with and/or been inspired by the rhythms and struggles of underserved communities throughout history and in our present day.
Part of the proceeds from the event go to The Roots and Wings Project and efforts to launch their first theatrical production, Tree of Fire, inspired by the lives of incarcerated women. Tree of Fire is planned as a site-specific traveling theater production, showing to the public in abandoned prisons, and creating awareness about prison reform and the people living in the shadow of the U.S. prison system.
Rooted in theater, RAW advocates the collaboration of all the art forms. IG•NITE will showcase the talents of musicians, artists and poets, with performances by: Double G, founder of Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra and Music Supervisor of the Roots and Wings project, San Francisco’s Audio Angel, Miriam Peniche, Margaret Laurena Kemp, Jacque C. Smith, Mike the Poet, A.K Toney, Ms. Sho’King, Bus Stop Prophet & DJs Dan Wilcox from KCRW, Cee Brown, Ricky Chavez and Sloe Poke. Performances will also include excerpts from the play and the musical score of Tree of Fire and works by Patricia Zamorano.
There is a suggested donation of $10, however no one will be denied entrance due to lack of funds. CASA 0101 is a fiscal sponsor of The Roots and Wings Project.
