…And Then Some
Artist Dahlia Elsayed
On view October 28, 2010 through January 8, 2011
Reception: Thursday, November 18, 6:00-9:00pm
Dahlia Elsayed combines text and imagery in her solo exhibition …And Then Some to create narrative paintings that document internal and external geographies and visual mappings of places and memories. For more than 10 years Elsayed's work has drawn from her surroundings, informed by autobiography and landscape to create contemporary cartographies of emotional locations. What prompted her desire to chronicle such connections between the topographical with the psychological is a personal story and history of diaspora movement. For three generations Elsayed's family moved from continent to continent to escape political and religious persecution, which fostered a curiosity and need for the artist to explore how stories and landscape shape the other.
The project is connected to and follows in sequence Elsayed's recent exhibition All of It… that originated at Gallery Aferro also in Newark. For All of It… the artist engaged in a thoughtful process of editing and revision to arrange more than 100 selected works produced over the past decade. Once more the artist will revisit and rearrange works to animate one of Aljira's gallery spaces.
