Examining the critical function of immaterial art, this discussion will bring together artists and writers who use the internet to produce and distribute information. Exceeding locality, the following panelists use the internet as a tool, building communities that share converging interests and goals. By examining the contrasting practices, the panelists will discuss their projects and their approach to the immaterial.


Panelists:

Kari Altmann is an artist who has grown up employing various social web platforms as her own artistic tools and exhibition spaces. She now uses her website as a performative archive and research device, leaving it exposed to the public.

Ethan Greenbaum is a New York based artist and a co-founder and editor of The Highlights, an online arts journal. Selected exhibition venues include Anna Kustera, NY, Circus Gallery, LA, Shenghua Arts Center, Nanjing and The Suburban in Chicago. Forthcoming exhibitions include a survey of New York based artists at Syracuse University and curatorial projects at The Suburban, Chicago and Marvelli Gallery, NY.

Gene McHugh is an art writer based in Brooklyn. His work has appeared on the Rhizome.org blog and in Artforum and he recently received a Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant to develop his ongoing "Post Internet" blog (122909a.com).

Luke Stettner is one of the founders and editors of thehighlights.org. His solo exhibition, The Fold, opens at Stene Projects in Stockholm, Sweden on September 2nd. He was selected to exhibit a solo project for the Present/Future prize this November in Torino, Italy (curated by Luigi Fassi). He is represented by the Kate Werble Gallery in New York.

Brad Troemel is an artist and writer living in New York. He is currently an MFA candidate and adjunct professor at NYU. Troemel has exhibited internationally and his writing has been featured in publications such as Rhizome and Art Fag City. His work focuses on the liberatory potential for the internet to serve as an alternative exhibition space to institutions dominated by the art market.

Lance Wakeling is an artist working in Brooklyn, New York, and the editor of Private Circulation, a PDF bulletin distributed by e-mail.
