CIEL VARIABLE LAUNCHES A NEW WEB SITE: Ciel variable archives online - 20 years of contemporary photography
—-
Ciel variable magazine is proud to announce the launch of its new Web site devoted to its archives encompassing more than twenty years of production. Ciel variable archives online - 20 years of contemporary photography is now accessible at http://www.cielvariable.ca/archives.
Ciel variable archives online - 20 years of contemporary photography is a unique project that gives free access to the entire content of the magazine since it was launched in 1987. The new Web platform has been designed to be easy and interactive, offering innovative and flexible tools for exploring a collection, spanning more than twenty years, of some 1,000 unabridged essays on contemporary photography by more than 350 authors, as well as more than 4,000 images by some 750 Canadian and foreign photographers. Users may browse through the collection’s texts and images in multiple ways: by issue or through a mosaic of images, or by searches by keyword, author, or artist. A thematic section also contains short essays that briefly present the evolution of artistic practices and issues during specific periods and offer crossover access to the content of the Web site. This section will be further developed as the site content expands.
Ciel variable archives online - 20 years of contemporary photography also offers educational tools specifically oriented to teachers and college and university students. These tools have been developed under three main themes: Environment and Landscape (cultured landscapes, industrial landscapes, nature, ecology, architecture), Self and Identity (narrative, place, personal and collective, collecting and archives, memory), and Image and Experimentation (history and practice of photography, techniques, theatrical, narration). These thematic tours suggest complete work frames that allow students, alone or within groups, to develop written and oral skills related to understanding contemporary photography works, research, and criticism.
Through this new Web site, making the entire content of the magazine accessible to the public, Ciel variable has created an innovative way to promote artistic and cultural productions to a larger audience. Development of the project has also generated significant royalties for contributors to the magazine and therefore promotes respect for copyright.
