The title of this show alludes to Joseph Campbell’s "The Flight of the Wild Gander," a collection of essays about the Sanskrit concept of the paramahamsa. Campbell describes these enlightened spiritual teachers as geese (hamsa), who are able to transcend the mundane, just as geese transcend the earth through flight. Like geese, these sages feel at home both on water and on land, much like one who adeptly negotiates disparate geopolitical cultural codes. The five artists in the show, all New York-based, reflect on the complex issues that frame South Asian identity, whether based in gender, media representations, or politics.
Participating artists include Chitra Ganesh, Mala Iqbal, Jesal Kapadia, Yamini Nayar, and Divya Mehra. The South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement, visibility, and development of emerging and established South Asian women artists.
