SOUND OFF
Wednesday, August 26, 2009 / 7pm
((audience)) HQ / 125 Maiden Lane, NYC / 9th Floor

NEW YORK - ((audience)) announces the launch of SOUND OFF, a monthly event at our temporary headquarters at 125 Maiden Lane in Lower Manhattan.

((audience)), a traveling festival of 5.1 surround sound art, was recently awarded a temporary office space by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space program. In keeping with our mission to provide and establish new contexts for sound art, ((audience)) is inviting a broad range of artists and performers to visit our HQ in order to imagine aloud and together ways to acoustically activate this defunct office space.

The inauguration of SOUND OFF will be simultaneously a charrette, a laying of groundwork and an informal salon during which artists and attendees can “listen” to and devise proposals for ((audience)) HQ and present them to the assembled audience; plan for future instances of SOUND OFF and also for SPEAKERS, a forthcoming radio program of recorded roundtable discussions; and finally, converse, share and socialize.

This event is open to the public, but you must RSVP by August 25 to Lauren Rosati at lauren@au.dience.org. Attendees must bring photo ID.

DIRECTIONS:
By Subway:
2/3/4/5 to Wall Street or J/M/Z to Broad Street. Exit onto Wall Street. Walk East on Wall Street to the corner of Pearl Street. Walk three blocks North on Pearl Street to Maiden Lane. 125 Maiden Lane is between Pearl and Water Streets.

ABOUT ((AUDIENCE))
((audience)) is an unprecedented project that explores the cinema as a 21st century concert hall. Currently, sound artists often must “perform” what are essentially multi-track recordings, interpreting the playback of their compositions to account for technical and acoustic variations in different sites. ((audience)) bypasses this problem by considering the cinema-hall as a standard technical and acoustic platform and site. The centerpiece of ((audience)) is a 2 ½ hour “film” of 5.1 surround sound works by seven international artists intended for presentation in movie theaters as “cinema in the dark.”

((audience)) is dedicated to the advancement of aural arts by providing wide distribution and new contexts for works by emerging and established sound artists and composers. For our first decade, ((audience)) will focus on the cinema as a technical and distributive platform, organizing a biennial nomadic art festival in partnership with select arts organizations worldwide.

Conceived in 2006, ((audience)) will premiere in Syracuse, NY this year and will continue to travel internationally through 2010. We are partnering with local arts organizations in cities worldwide and expect to hold 12 further screenings/festivals across New York and Califonia; in Minneapolis, MN; Providence, RI; Toronto and Montreal, Canada; Beirut, Lebanon; Stockholm, Sweden and Berlin, Germany. Curatorial lectures, performances, artist presentations and exhibitions will coincide with screenings on a city-to-city basis. For more information on ((audience)), visit http://au.dience.org.

((audience)) is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space program.
