People and Buildings: Money Movin'

Please join CUP for a look at the circulation of capital on scales large and small, from Wall Street trading floors to pawn shops in South Central L.A. We'll be screening a selection from Andreas Hoessli's "Wall Street" (2004) and Lisanne Skyler's "No Loans Today" (1995).

"Wall Street" navigates the sprawling spaces at the center of the world’s finances. From a primer on the sign language used on the floor of the Stock Exchange to a fascinating bird’s eye view analysis of the world market trading floor, Hoessli investigates what global capital exchange really looks like.

Skyler’s "No Loans Today" provides an intimate portrait of financial transactions at their most local. Embedded in the daily scene at ABC Loan Co., a pawn shop and check cashing outlet in South Central L.A., "No Loans" eloquently documents the phenomenon of fringe banking in low-income communities neglected by traditional institutions of finance.
