The Internet Yami-Ichi (Internet Black Market)* in New York is a free-to-attend flea market event where people gather and exchange “Internet-ish” things in real life. Originating in the mysterious orient**, this New York edition of the Internet Yami-Ichi will be the first in the United States and appropriately, the largest yet. Over 100 vendors are slated to participate at the Knockdown Center, a 50,000 square foot former door factory-turned arts space in Maspeth, Queens.

IDPW organized the first Yami-Ichi in Tokyo in 2012, it mutated in 2014 to Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Sapporo. Past vendor items include glitch-embroidered clothing, Edward Snowden snow globes, and apps rejected by Apple. Check out more info here: https://goo.gl/vR6YOC

The Internet Yami-Ichi in New York coincides with the first ever World Wide Yami-Ichi Weeks (WWyW), simultaneous events taking place in Taichung, Taiwan; São Paulo, Brazil; Linz, Austria, and Seoul, Korea. More on the WWyW can be found here: yami-ichi.biz/WWyW

Flea markets and the Internet are both fanatical and chaotic mixes of the amazing and the useless. In the Internet Yami-ichi the wills and desires which brought us online are salvaged into a social exchange. A celebration of the Internet, for the real world.

Everyone is invited to participate. Vendors receive 100% profit from what they sell. Just keep in mind our two rules:

1.) Sell things related to the Internet.

2.) No dangerous, harmful, or illegal goods, please! This black market wants to remain free and useful.

*The Japanese word "Yami-Ichi" translates directly into the English "black market", though due to an emphasis created by mixing different Japanese writing systems the word "yami" takes on double meaning of "sick for" / "addicted to" etc., so a more accurate translation might be "Internet Obsessive Market".

**IDPW (I.D. Password, affectionately known as "I pass") is a loose collective of 10-some Japanese media artists operating under the slogan "a secret society on the internet that goes back more than 100 years", who descend on various internet scenes from time to time. They are known for having produced the "Internet Black Market", "Whatever Button", "Text Party" and other projects in monthly get-togethers. Among these, their "Whatever Button" won the "New Face" award at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival, in 2012.
