About
Dance & Performing Arts
Dance and Performance programs at Bumbershoot focus on contemporary expressions in the modes of modern dance, cabaret, theatre, performance art, and multimedia performance, often many of these combined. Our programming attracts new audiences to the performing arts and works seamlessly with the wealth of programming elsewhere in the festival. The program aims to set a national standard for talent, presentation, and production, and to maintain regional community representation.
Fine Arts Poster
The Bumbershoot Fine Arts Poster is a limited-edition poster featuring work by a local artist. The poster features a reproduction of the artwork paired with a bit of elegant text (i.e. not the complete list of bands and sponsors) and is presented with the support of the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture. Past artists have included Jeffry Mitchell (2013), Claes Oldenberg (1972), Jacob Lawrence (1976), Faye Jones (1982), Ginny Ruffner (1998), Dawn Cerny (2007), and Gregory Blackstock (2010).
The program—one of the longest-standing traditions at Bumbershoot expands on our Visual Arts exhibitions, and honors both emerging and established members of the city’s Fine Arts community.
Northwest Comedy
The Northwest Comedy program at Bumbershoot aims to highlight the breadth and quality of comedians and comedy groups based out of the Northwest (WA, OR, ID, and BC).
Spectacles
Spectacles are an integral part of the curated experience at Bumbershoot. Spectacles can take many forms, including marching bands, flash mobs, guerilla theatre, interactive art installations, acrobats, burlesque performance, aerialists, jugglers, human sculpture, etc. No matter the genre or discipline, these outdoor Spectacles should be creative while pushing boundaries of typical exhibition and performance spaces, exposing and engaging the festival public to a range of artistic expressions.
Theater
The Center Theatre/Carleton Playhouse at Seattle Center will host three exceptional days of regional theater co-curated by Theatre Puget Sound (TPS). TPS nurtures a healthy and vibrant theatre community, strives to develop strong ties among the region’s theatre professionals and raises visibility of this region’s theatre scene at the local, national and international levels.
Visual Arts
Visual Arts at Bumbershoot presents cutting edge, contemporary artwork that highlights the talents of mid-career and emerging artists. Featuring site-specific and interactive exhibits as well as more traditional presentations, the Visual Arts program has presented groundbreaking trends like sound art, virtual reality, and graffiti alongside fresh takes on traditional media such as painting, textiles and photography. The program includes outdoor installations, interactive public art, and other site-specific art projects, which push the boundaries of exhibition beyond the gallery model, exposing and engaging the festival public to a range of artistic expressions.
Words and Ideas
The Words & Ideas Program at Bumbershoot engages and inspires a diverse festival audience by featuring a series of conversations that examine the point where literature, pop culture, new media, theories, and trends intersect and, from there, often explode into new cultural phenomena. The program aims to set a national standard for talent, presentation, and production, and to maintain regional community representation.
