This exhibition focuses on the label Leerraum [ ] as a platform for multi-channel sound releases concerned with ideas of sound in relation to space, silence, structure, and an active process of listening. Leervoll focuses on sonic constructions that explore the possibilities of environment and spatial listening, while also, drawing attention to structure, composition, and material interests. Our focus here is to present the Swiss label Leerraum [ ] as a platform and community of artists exploring and releasing surround sound pieces. Since 2003 Leerraum [ ] has established an identity with a clear interest in such concerns, pioneering the distribution of works beyond the stereo standard to multi-channel works in 4.0, 4.1, and 5.1 surround. The performance series will consist of artists from the label that currently live in the East Coast of the US. This would not only add another dimension to the exhibit but also would increase the flow of visitors to the gallery.
Additional information about Leerraum [ ] and its artists may be found at: http://www.leerraum.ch
Richard Garet is a sound and video artist. He is interested in the phenomena found and produced in aural and visual time-based media, in nature’s processes, and human beings' relationship with both artificial and natural environments. Garet explores the referential, communicational, and sensory characteristics of the various media he utilizes. Additionally, he focuses on the investigation of aural and visual spatial-contexts, relational structures, process, materiality, function, and form. Even though Garet’s work suits the standard gallery setting, many of his other activities as an artist explore the various practices of experimental sound and video performance. All of these modes are additional ways in which Garet’s work exposes the audience to visual and physical acoustic sensory perception. Richard Garet has collaborated in the past with artists Andy Graydon, Gill Arno, Ben Owen, Gil Sanson, and André Gonçalves through the EA collective. He has also collaborated with Brendan Murray, Shimpei Takeda, Sawako, Chika Ijima, Bruce Tovsky, Bruce McClure, Adam Kendall, Jeremy Slater, Peter Eudenbach, Wolfgang Von Stürmer, Zimoun, Zach Layton, Asher Thal-Nir, and Aaron Kadoch.
