hi rachel.
thanks for all your great work with rhizome.
by way of introduction, i'm an american artist and writer living in
paris. i'm also known as mark stephen meadows. i spent time at xerox-parc
and SRI before moving here to paris where i paint, write, and lecture.
for full disclosure see http://bore.com .. or .. http://boar.com .. or ..
http://boor.com.
okay. so much for all that. i write with two things that i hope will
interest you…
1. ART: The Sinners and The Saints: 13 Photomanipulations.
http://machine-simple.com
first, i wanted to notify you of a digital art exhibit. it is the second
in a 2-part series in which i depict the lives of 13 notable catholic
saints as real people. they might be photos, they might be paintings, its
hard for me to tell the difference these days.
media theory aside, catholic ideals are still inherent in our modern
notions of digital art: the separation of the essence (the software, or
soul) from the characteristic (the hardware, or body). since i like
touching things i decided to print this show rather than do it
online. though i have been exhibiting my art online since 1993
(http://boar.com/) with this show i tried to pull something real, and
tangible, out of the glassy pool of the monitor. the catholic saints
seemed a good place to work from because they were so ethereal to begin
with. and not..
an online preview of the show can be seen at http://machine-simple.com).
the opening is tomorrow (sept 4) at the machine simple gallery, (4 rue
androuet, paris, 75018) and runs through the month of september.
2. BOOK: Pause & Effect: The Art of Interactive Narrative
http://pause-effect.com
secondly, i have recently finished writing a book on interactive narrative
called "Pause & Effect; The Art of Interactive Narrative" in which, over
270 pages, i detail what interactive narrative is, how it works, and why
the visual arts are so important to this emerging artform.
i have interviewed over a dozen authors of interactive narrative including
Marcos Novak and Scott McCloud and have included a print-based animation
flipbook that was rendered from a 3D model i built. testimonials given by
lev manovich and brenda laurel.
but the book posits we are now, with the introduction of interactive
narrative, sitting on a powderkeg of a new artform and its only a matter of
understanding how to represent multiple forms of perspective and
interactivity in a way that works with emerging drama structures before we
see this become a key element in how we understand digital media.
in sum, perception is narration, and this relies on perspective.
thanks much.
as you can see, i've been busy so i'm pleased to have something to offer to
rhizome.
this is my first time submitting anything, so if i can offer anything else
please let me know.
