Call for Site-Specific Sound Works for Silo City, Buffalo

  • Deadline:
    July 1, 2014, 11:59 a.m.
  • Location:
null point series/silo city, buffalo, Buffalo, New York, US

[null point] seeks proposals for new site-specific music (notated, improvised, or anything in between) or sound art (in the broadest sense), for any instrumental/electronic/found sound sources. Existing works suitable for presentation at the site will also be considered. Projects that aim to build new musical/sonic languages from the ground up, in dialogue with the site, are preferred.

Works could be sited
•in the highly reverberant interiors of the silos, or
•on the docking area adjacent to the Buffalo River.
•Other nearby locations can be possible—if this is of interest, please contact us.

Works might also engage with other aspects of the site, including but not at all limited to:
•history of Silo City and surroundings (see especially Bohen 2012 in bibliography)
•negativity of deindustrialization/ rust/obsolescence (see bibliography)
•the silos’ influence upon modernist architecture and design (see especially Schneekloth 2006)
•ecological/psychological/everyday implications of the industrialization of food production

To submit a proposal for a new work, please include:
•A detailed proposal for the new work, on 2 pages letter/A4-sized paper (may include text, notation, diagrams, images, etc.). Please specify the work’s instrumentation, required equipment/materials, spatial dimensions, power requirements (i.e. number of outlets), and duration—see below for logistical limitations. Please also specify where the work would be sited (see above).
•Optional: a sound/video sample of the proposed work
•A score (if applicable) and recording or video of a previous piece, preferably one similar to the new work being proposed

To submit an existing work, please include:
•The score (if applicable) and recording or video of an existing work that would be suitable for the occasion.
•A short narrative (150-250 words) explaining its relevance to the occasion. Please also specify where the work would be sited (see above).
•The work’s logistical requirements: instrumentation, required equipment/materials, spatial dimensions, power requirements (i.e. number of outlets), and duration—see below for logistical limitations.

Please send submissions to nullpointseries@gmail.com. If you are sending files larger than 1 MB, please send links to downloads or streaming files—do NOT send these as email attachments.
Deadline for submissions: July 1, 2014. Successful applicants will be notified by Fall 2014. For notated pieces involving [null point] performers, scores and parts will be due April 1, 2015.

Logistical Constraints (please read closely)
•Participating composers/artists may provide their own performers. Additionally, composers may write for the Crossfire Percussion Duo (http://www.crossfirepercussion.com), and/or three additional performers (most orchestral instruments are available—please contact us for details), with or without electronics.
•A limited number of power outlets are available within the elevators.
•[null point] can provide basic audio equipment (please contact us for details). If specialized audio (or other) equipment is needed, participating composers/artists must provide it for themselves.
•Please note that the ambient noise level inside the elevators is not zero—occasionally crickets, highways, railroads, etc. are audible inside the silos. These sounds might or might be incorporated into proposals.

Attendance/Travel
Attendance at the event is mandatory if the work involves electronics; in other cases it is highly recommended. If you are creating a new work, it may be advantageous to visit the site while you create the piece—visits to Silo City can be arranged.
Assistance with travel expenses is not available but it may be possible to arrange accommodation for visiting artists.
