Branding campaigns such as I ♥ NY have been seared into our collective memory. But aside from their successful dissemination, who has benefitted most from these efforts? CUP is pleased to present an evening on New York City branding campaigns of past and present. Miriam Greenberg, author of “Branding New York City: How a City in Crisis was Sold to the World”, will be interviewing Willy Wong from NYC & Company, the City of New York's official marketing organization. They will look into the politics of urban representation and the role of branding in urban redevelopment.

Miriam Greenberg is the author of "Branding New York: How a City in Crisis was Sold to the World" (Routledge, 2008). She received her PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center, and now is Assistant Professor of Sociology, with an emphasis on urban studies and media, at the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on marketing responses to the fiscal crisis period of the 1970’s as well as the post-9/11 era.

Willy Wong leads the creative vision for all initiatives on behalf of New York City as senior vice president and executive creative director at NYC & Company, the City of New York’s official marketing, tourism, and partnerships organization. Wong received his AB from Dartmouth College and an MFA from Yale University. NYC & Company was formed in 1999 and, in 2006, merged with NYC Big Events and NYC Marketing to reach Bloomberg’s goal of attracting 50 million visitors annually by the year 2015.
