VIDEO ART EXHIBITION FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY
Convergence features work by two Kansas City artists July 12th
Multi-colored waves lap against an unseen shore; shafts of light pierce through layers of an abandoned structure slowly revolving overhead - time is distorted, images overlapped. Experimental video art by Jason Bernagozzi and Debora Brown will fill 2 floors of the Alcott Arts Center in a one night exhibition, Convergence, on Second Saturday. The exhibition will feature single channel video by each artist, as well as a new video sculpture by Bernagozzi, a series of archival prints of video stills by Brown, and the artists’ first collaborative video installation.
Bernagozzi and Brown’s gestural, abstracted videos express resonance instead of representation. The artists employ real-time video and audio processing techniques, pushing the boundaries of the video signal, and playing with viewers’ perceptions of time and space.
The videos that Debora Brown will be exhibiting, as well as the stills from them, were generated through overlapping layers of the video. The layers consist of identical video playing at differing speeds, controlled by sound waves. While the source footage comes from a walk down a road at night or bare tree limbs lying in a stream, the result of the processing is that new types of landscapes are created. Some contain sensuously flowing images, suggestive of human forms, while others flicker with the intensity of a storm. One work, Stream: 7th Iteration, is created from over 16,000 layers of video.
Jason Bernagozzi’s new work is part of a continuing investigation into the relational aesthetics between the body and architecture. His work was shot in the tunnels and drainage sewers underneath Kansas City. To achieve the abstracted imagery, the artist processed the footage through an algorithmic visualization program called Jitter. By decoding the representational video image, he creates new relationships between the body and its environment as inseparable liminal spaces that the viewer can discover and explore. The sculptural way he presents this video also encourages the viewer to play with their own spacial reception to the work as an immersive experience.
Bernagozzi and Brown have lived in Kansas City, sharing a studio at the Arts Incubator, for the past 2 years. Jason Bernagozzi graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute earlier this year with a BFA in Photo/New Media. Debora Brown received a BFA in Video Art from the Atlanta College of Art in 1999, and an MFA in Electronic Integrated Arts from Alfred University in Alfred, NY in 2002. Brown has been active in the Kansas City arts community, serving as both Board Liaison for the Crossroads Community Association and as Gallery Manager for Byron Cohen Gallery. The artists, who are engaged, will be moving to Alfred, NY at the end of July, where Bernagozzi will be pursuing an Electronic Integrated Arts MFA. Both Brown’s and Bernagozzi’s work have been shown nationally and internationally.
