EdLab Digital Art Resident Artists Announced
EdLab has selected three artists – Daniel Iglesia (New York, New York), Lara Kohl (New York, New York), and Margot Herster (Austin, Texas) – for the first EdLab Digital Art Residency (EDAR) http://edlab.tc.columbia.edu/index.php?q=node/1887 . The residency will take place from July 1st to August 29th at the Gottesman Libraries. Having artists working on site, EdLab hopes to generate discussions about digital visual culture and education, and support cross-disciplinary dialogues among the Teachers College community and the contemporary art world through artists' creative use of technologies.
This summer, these artists will work with several different digital media - 3-D virtual visual experience by Daniel Iglesia, media sculptural installation by Lara Kohl, and digital image presentations by Margot Herster. In addition, their projects for EDAR investigate social and political issues in contemporary society. For example, during this election year, Kohl's video installation addresses the idealism of "the American Dream" by constructing a pier from recycle wood materials in the library. Herster examines social issues by depicting people's life in detention at the U.S. Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, Cuba with more then 2000 images, text, and audio installation. Iglesia, who is a musician and performance artist, uses online databases to create interactive works of sound and vision.
There will be a series of Artist Talks on different topics:
* Tuesday, July 15th - "art practices and concerns"
* Tuesday, July 22nd - "the artists' current projects"
* Tuesday, July 29th - "artistic influences"
* Tuesday, August 12th - "discussion of summer work"
Artist Talks will take place from 2-4pm on the 2nd floor of the Gottesman Libraries. Sessions will be an informal chance to meet the artists - attend for part of a session, or come to all four!
Educational exhibitions by each of the artists will follow during the 2008-2009 academic year (times/dates TBA).
