LEARNING TO SEE AT 1735 WALNUT
Experiments in Video, Installation and Embodiment in New Media
Jason Bernagozzi’s single channel videos and interactive video installations will be shown on 3 floors in a weekend-long solo exhibition, Learning To See, opening First Friday, May 2nd at 1735 Walnut. His process is about learning to see through the electronic eye of the video camera by decoding and recoding the world around him. A room is filled with multiple projections that mix images of bodily forms and architecture; as a viewer sits in front of an image of a girl meditating, sensors trigger an event that explodes her form into prisms of light and color.
Bernagozzi’s video is created using a program called Max/MSP/Jitter that is an algorithm based system that allows for infinite possibilities of processing video and sound, as well as for creating interactivity. The artist is primarily self-taught in this program. The works presented reflect Bernagozzi’s developing relationship with the video signal as a means to express his investigations into the nature of identity within both the human and urban consciousness. By experimenting with the idea of the copy and the simulation, his work explores ideas about the link between knowledge and being.
Jason Bernagozzi is a graduating senior at the Kansas City Art Institute. He has lived in Kansas City for the past 2 years and has a studio at the Arts Incubator. Bernagozzi previously was a student in Video Art and the Atlanta College of Art where he studied with video pioneer Sara Hornbacher; the school closed and prompted his move to Kansas City. Although only a student, Bernagozzi’s work has been shown both nationally and internationally. Bernagozzi will be attending Alfred University’s Electronic Integrated Art graduate MFA program in Alfred, New York this fall.
