Workshop Description:
The Exploratorium is embarking on an ambitious new project to develop exhibits that let the public experiment with social interactions and learn about the scientific study of human behavior—and we’d like you to play a part!
The Exploratorium began building hands-on interactive exhibits over 40 years ago. Founder Frank Oppenheimer led the museum’s effort to create an environment where visitors could directly interact with science, art, and human perception.
With support from the National Science Foundation, the Exploratorium is now actively developing exhibits designed to illustrate key concepts in the social sciences. These exhibits will give visitors, students, teachers, and other institutions opportunities to explore human social interactions and to link everyday small-group behaviors to larger societal challenges, such as resource depletion, environmental degradation, and climate change.
During this one-day workshop, participants will collaborate with seasoned Exploratorium exhibit developers, scientists, and other project staff to generate ideas relating to the prisoner’s dilemma—a classic scenario which researchers use to explore how people think about trust, altruism, and short- vs. long-term gain.
The workshop’s primary goal is to turn a complex scenario based in game theory into a compelling and enlightening visitor experience. Workshop groups will develop “quick and dirty” exhibit prototypes to actualize and test their ideas using the museum’s iterative exhibit design process. Groups will also have a chance to evaluate their prototypes with museum visitors.
So bring your skills, creativity, and enthusiasm to the museum and play a role in this process. The ideas we generate together may form the nucleus of one or more new exhibits when the Exploratorium opens its doors at its new location in 2013.
