Founded in 2000 the VUW School of Design has gone through a rapid development to become a leader in the field of design education in New Zealand. The School also has a strong commitment to digital technologies which reflects and supports the growth of a vibrant and internationally recognised digital creative sector in Wellington.
The role focuses on delivering high quality teaching thereby ensuring academic and professional quality in the Schools First Year Design programme. The candidate should have a good understanding of essential design ideas, principles, theories and practices, as they pertain to first year teaching. They should also have a good understanding of how digital technologies are impacting on these considerations, not only in terms of the skills and knowledge required, but also the new opportunities they afford in terms of engaging with students and facilitating the exchange of ideas.
The candidate must possess a deep understanding of how the first year of studies becomes integral to the discipline specific studies in Industrial Design, Media Design and Culture+Context that begin in the second year. The appointment will include primarily first year teaching, however, depending on qualifications the appointee may have an opportunity to teach in courses and specialisations in addition to those specifically applied for.
Candidates given preference for the position will hold a Masters or PhD degree (or equivalent). Demonstrable abilities as a designer will further strengthen the application as will a track record of design research outputs such as publications and/or creative works. The candidate will be encouraged and assisted by the school to build on his/her research profile.
