A Purpose for Art hosts thought-provoking group art exhibit in
support of Homeless Youth Services & Sylvia Rivera Food Pantry of MCCNY

Jackson Hall Gallery of MCCNY, curator Jorge A. Valdes and A Purpose for Art present a special exhibition: “Spirituality: Icons & Concepts”, showing Thursday, November 17 – Friday, December 2, 2011, with an opening reception on Thursday, November 17 from 6 to 8pm at the Jackson Hall Gallery, 446 W 36th St, NY, NY (between 9th & 10th).
An assorted and talented group of 16 artists, emerging to established, unite to express spirituality on their terms, sending a message of acceptance, tolerance and coexistence to the public while supporting the various outreach programs of the MCCNY.  The exhibit is the second in a series of four, which is organized by A Purpose for Art, whose goals also include promoting and supporting local artists.

“The diverse collection of work on display gives the viewer a visual explosion of color, techniques, mediums and ideas over which to ponder for days.” states event organizer Anthony Matulis.  One is left with questions like, “What is spirituality? What does it mean to me? Who are we?  Where did we come from and why are
we here?”  It comes during a time when social & economic disparity, world hunger and global warming prevail, further provoking the line of questioning above, however it still manages to embody all that it is and all that it isn’t, from the simplest to the most conceptual in one location.

The exhibit includes photography by Renan Dario Arango, academic painting by Brandon Soloff and Jesus Rivera, mixed media by Raoul Sentenat and JAVA, abstractions by Joyce Pommer, contemporary by Julio Mendoza, naïve mosaics by Frankie Brown and hyper-realism by Zofia Bogusz, among others.
