In the beginning, humans migrated. Continents were explored and settled, allowing diversity to flourish. Migration, at the core of the evolutionary process, led to adaptation and development of species and civilizations. Today, human migration is defined by country, origin, and culture—the rules and roles of immigration controlling and politicizing the process. 
Living in a new country, whether as a citizen, refugee, permanent resident, student, or worker, documented or undocumented, impacts each person differently. 
For the exhibition IMPACT, we are seeking submissions from artists and writers who are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Submitted works should address experiences relative to the process or journey of moving from or between one country, culture, or community to another or being raised within an immigrant family or community. Works could have a traditional source or conceptual basis from the country of origin, blend the innovative with the historic, be humorous or satirical, transformative or concrete, yet contain or reflect a sense of displacement, assimilation, acceptance, struggle, identity, discrimination, loss, inundation, exhilaration, discovery, openness or simply being, that is part of understanding identity, place, language, community, and culture specific to the immigration experience. Submissions can be in the form of visual art, video, stories, narratives, poems, performance, music.
IMPACT (October 6–27, 2011) is the inaugural exhibition at the College of Arts and Sciences Swing Space Gallery. The exhibition and related programming are presented in conjunction with the international conference Immigration: What is at Stake? (October 20–21)  at the Ohio State University–Columbus Campus. Please submit images for up to 3 works, no more than 6 images, in JPG format on a CD (no power point presentations). Include an image list that contains the title, dimensions, media, and year for each piece.  Video work should be under 10 minutes, submitted on a CD or DVD-rom as a high quality Quicktime movie.  
Submit an artist’s statement explaining how your artwork relates to immigration, 300 words maximum.  
Include your name, email address, and daytime phone number.
