AND & DaDa Online Artists’ Residency

AND in
partnership with DaDa - Disability and Deaf Arts are developing an innovative
artists’ online residency programme. This residency offers a unique opportunity
for a disabled* or D/deaf artist to work alongside a technologist to develop an
online / web based art project or area of research. The aim of the residency is
to enable an artist to investigate how technological advancements online has
effected how disabled or deaf artists can make work.
We are
seeking applications from artists working in emerging practices and have
identified the following thematic as areas we are interested in investigating;
The denial / shifting
of identities
Democracy of the
Internet
Activism Online
Disabled by
Environment / Design
* Disabled people are people who have impairments and experience some
form of social exclusion as a result.
Outcomes
The
residency format is open ended, however we hope that the programme will result
in a project or an area of research that could be further developed for the AND
Festival and DaDaFest in 2012.
Participation:
Resident
artists are expected to engage collaboratively and creatively with a
technologist and the partner organisation staff. The technologist will be
selected in conversation with the artist based on the specific requirements of
the selected proposal.
The
residency programme will provide a number platforms and opportunities for the
artists to engage with the environment and the communities. Key milestones are;
The AND
festival will take place in Liverpool on 29 September to 2 October, the
selected artists will be expected to be present (physically or via the web)and
engage with the festival activities.
DaDaFest
International 2012 is happening from 17 August – 2 September, with the theme of
TransActions – Fluid Bodies: Shifting Identities.
The
selected artists will be expected make their residency activity open to
audiences online, for examples via a blog.
Residency Details
This
residency will be initiated in September 2011 and the duration will be mapped
out dependant on the selected proposal with the artist, technologist, AND and
DaDa staff.
The
following budget is available to the resident artist (to be managed by AND and
DaDa):
An artists' fee of
£2000 GBP (to include any materials and/or production costs)
Travel, access* and
accommodation expenses to the UK of up to £1800 GBP to participate in the
AND festival 2011.
A technologists fee of £1500 GBP will be made available to support the
project (to include any materials and/or production costs).
The aim will
to be to develop a longer term online project / reaseach, so AND and DaDa would
aim to secure further investment for the project after the initial research and
development phases.
*This
access budget is available but if the artist needs additional support please
state this on the application form.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This is a
co-production between Abandon Normal Devices (AND) and Disability and Deaf Arts
(DaDa).
About Abandon Normal Devices (AND)
AND is an
energetic festival, a catalyst for production and experimentation, the festival
invites audiences to experience the best in new cinema and digital culture in a
celebration that spills from screens and galleries into the streets and
imaginations of the nation. AND is a 2012 inspired festival, funded by Legacy
Trust UK and part of WE PLAY, the Northwest cultural legacy programme for the
London 2012 Olympic
and
Paralympic Games.
This
programme forms part of AND Regional Residency Programme, How to be a Resident.
In Summer 2011 and will launch a two year programme of residencies across the
Northwest and online. AND will work in partnership with regional organisations
such as Forestry commission and British Waterways, to develop a programme that
will question the model of a contemporary arts residency programme.
During the
AND festival in Liverpool resident artists and partners will together to discuss their
experiences and question, how to be a resident?

West, formerly known as NWDAF, it continues to be a cutting edge Disability and
Deaf Arts Agency, not only from its base in Liverpool, but also across the
